10 dumb money moves to avoid

My 28-year-old niece and I were recently talking about money. A search for free STUFF ONLINE will return over 180,000,000 results in Google, but out of those a big portion require

  • that you enter your email address so they can send you emails
  • that you purchase after a short free trial period
  • that you wade through pages of information and sales hype before getting to the free section.

I can understand the frustration. I have spent hundreds of hours over the years trying to find what I needed for free. After all, raising children as a single parent is expensive and there was often nothing much left to purchase computer related software and other things. But, depending on what you are looking fore there ARE places online today where you can access totally free content relatively easily and painlessly.

For example:

Choose from food, beauty, health, kids, pets, house hold, books and magazines, office supplies, tools and more. Although you must enter your information such as address, to receive the products, I have had no problems and my samples arrive quickly.

--Open source is SOFTWARE that is freely distributed by the developers. NO payment is required but you may be asked to make a donation to help the developers continue their work. --free BOOKS are available online too. Do you like to read books online. Several sites offer up free books that you can either read through their site or download to read later. I am talking now about traditional books, not just e-books. For example:

  • One example is at onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu and search through their offerings.

Or, you can try your local library. Usually you can access books online through most libraries if you have a current, valid library card. Your local university or community college may also have books you can access for free online. However, library e-books don't always work on all e-readers -- notably the most popular e-reader, Amazon's Kindle

What about gutenberg.org Gutenberg may be one of the largest free books depositary on the internet today. They include a section with about 33,000 free ebooks you can read on your iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader, iPhone, Android or other portable devices. NO FEE required. Keep in mind that the books here are free in the United States because their copyright has expired. This means that you won't find the newest top 10 here, but you will find unbeatable classics, references and more to tickle your mind with possibilities.

--free MUSIC is what you want but you want it legally, without the potential problems getting it from a peer-to-peer or other source can create. Have you tried ez-tracks.com? This site boasts free, 100% legal music. They bring you music that is free by making the site ad-supported. This means that the advertising on the site pays for the music. No risk of prosecution by the RIAA. Check they out. They may be the ones for you.

--free MOVIES and TV is available online if you know where to look. One of the most popular sites is HULU which offers Lifetime movies and hit TV shows. Another site you might try is fancast.com, or you can check network sites for popular series. I watch Y&R at cbs.com because I usually get busy and miss it. You can get streaming video of your favorite episodes of many programs by visiting the network page.

--free GAMES are available from Shockwave.com and the Pop Cap game site. I don't have the time to play games much but these are the two my husband likes when he wants a quick break. A search for free online GAMES in Google brings 333,000,000 results so I am re you can find what you are looking for within minutes.

These are, of course only a very few of the places where you can find the free Media, software, and products that you are looking for. I encourage you to be careful however. Read the FAQ and Terms on any site BEFORE thinking the free is really free. I am not affiliated with any of the sites mentioned in this article but offer them only as suggestions to help you find what you are looking for.

I am Barbara Cagle and for over 20 years I have been working and playing online. I am a certified teacher and as such I find that people are constantly asking how to do ____.

At http://www.LifeWithBarbara.com, I am working to share as much information as I can find. Why? Simply, because I really feel it is time to get back to basics. People Helping People. It is what has made us who we are.

Over the past few years I have seen so many false promises, of content and quality, misleading claims of product or services, and disappointed people who only want to get ahead a little but just can't seem to make a success of marketing on the internet.

If you need information, free products to offer for sale or as bonuses visit http://www.lifewithbarbara.com. No login or payments of any kind are required. Good Luck!
